Hunting to the killer of the photoreceptors
Ceramide is a term that anyone knows by some advertising of shampoos and creams, but few know that its increase leads cells to die. For this reason is a killer molecule. In the Retinitis Pigmentosa, photoreceptors undergo death even for the excessive activity of this killer, who for reasons unknown is present in high quantities. In a mouse model with Retinitis Pigmentosa, four research groups have united to fight this photoreceptors death, trying to inhibit the formation of ceramide-killer. In addition to my group are cooperating the group of Dr. Enrica Strettoi, Institute of Neuroscience CNR, Pisa, the group of Prof. Claudia Gargini, University of Pisa and the company Nanovector Turin. We administered in the retina of mice an inhibitor of its synthesis, and we observed a 50% death of photoreceptors, and a partial recovery of visual function. We now will proceed to a trial in humans in the hope that this new drug strategy to slow the progression and alleviate the suffering of patients with this disease.

2020 The Right to See
Is the title of the report of Dr. Chiara Olga Pierrottet, Scientific Director of the Association, presented at the "Third Retinitis Conference" held recently at the Institute for the Blind in Milan. During the presentation the doctor explained the latest innovations in the treatment of macular degeneration and on the visual rehabilitation in general. Expecially on the Retinitis Pigmentosa, presenting a new multicenter study that involved even the experts of the Association and which will soon present the results.
